The Upper East Region has recorded 43 maternal deaths, the highest over the last two years.

According to the Regional Health Directorate, late refusals, anaemia, post-partum hemorrhage account for the mortality cases.

Speaking at the 2021 annual performance conference in Bolgatanga, Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Dzotsi, expressed concern about the situation but assured of interventions to reduce the mortality rate.

“It is unfortunate to note the increasing maternal mortality in the region. In 2019, the region recorded 31 maternal deaths, the number increased to 36 deaths in 2020 and further increased to 43 deaths in 2021. The region is working on several maternal death reducing initiatives and systems strengthening moves to reduce the trend of maternal mortality”.

Dr. Dzotsi reiterated that effective home visits of pregnant women and maternal death audit recommendations are crucial to reducing the menace.

He called for a proper and quick referral system to help prevent maternal deaths.

Dr. Dzotsi implored care providers for a harnessed systematic approach to maternal health delivery by rolling out innovative strategies to reduce the canker.
