The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (UERCC) has pledged to organise a regional trade fair this year to help market the numerous economic potentials of the area to foreign and domestic investors.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu, made the disclosure at a press soiree here recently, as part activities marking the end of 2021.

He stressed that the region was endowed with countless economic potentials, when tapped would help fast-track the development of the region.

He mentioned tourism, dugouts, Tono, Vea, Temne irrigation projects and the construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, human resources among some of the economic potentials in the area.

Mr Yakubu indicated that statistics available indicated that well developed irrigation schemes such as the Tono, Vea and Tamne together could cultivate over 11,757 hectares of crops every farming season, but currently only 5,646 hectares had been cultivated so far.

“When the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam comes on stream, it is envisaged that an additional 24,000 hectares of irrigable land will be available for cultivation of crops”, the Regional Minister said.

The minister also revealed that plans were far advanced to revamp the cultivation of tomatoes in the region and revamp the Pwalugu Tomato Factory.

This would help generate more income and the creation of employment for the people in the area.

Mr Yakubu stated that the region, under the current regime has benefited from development projects and mentioned the expansion of roads, schools, health facilities and agricultural sector.

On peace and security, the Regional Minister, stated that the Regional Security Council had identified some hotspots including Bawku and Kandiga-Doba and was on top of the issue.

The Regional Minister commended journalists in the region for partnering the RCC in running the affairs and urged them to continue with their good works.
