Work on 30 roads being rehabilitated under the Sinohydro Road Projects in the Cape Coast Metropolis is progressing on schedule.

The projects are about 60 per cent done and are expected to be completed in June next year.

Some of the roads have, however, been completed and already open to traffic.

Some 22 kilometres of roads would be rehabilitated under the project in Cape Coast.

The works include drainage, culverts, earthworks, primer and sealing and in some cases walkways and pickup stations.

The roads

In an interview, the Central Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Mr Samuel Mensah, said work was ongoing at the various road project sites.

The roads include the Akotokyir-Jukwa road, Amamoma road, the Apewosika ATL-Duakor road where work has been completed.

Work on the Cape Coast Technical University and Ayifua roads is currently ongoing.

Mr Mensah said other roads under the Sino Hydro projects included the Kakumdo road, the Academy road, the Kwaprow link and the Besakrom-Dankwakrom road.

"Work is ongoing and we are very likely to be on schedule for completion," he stated.

In November 2019, the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, cut the sod for the construction and rehabilitation of the Inner City Roads in Cape Coast Project.

Under the project, the roads were to be rehabilitated and upgraded to improve accessibility and quality of life.

Communities to benefit from the project are Akotokyir, Kwaprow, Amamoma, Abura New Community, English Arabic area, PPAG area, Amissano, Besakrom, Dunkwakrom, Ayifua and Kakumdo.

The project is being undertaken with funding from the Ghana-Sinohydro Master Project Support Agreement that seeks to leverage a fraction of Ghana’s bauxite deposit for some critical infrastructure projects worth $2 billion.

Asphalt overlay

Mr Mensah said many roads in Cape Coast, including the Ashanti road, London Bridge, Post office-Ntsin road, part of the Degraft Johnson road, and the Nkanfoa road, were going to have asphalt surfacing.

He said asphalt overlays were also being undertaken in Agona Swedru and Kasoa currently.
