The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it is on course to making the Kaneshie Polyclinic a supporting COVID-19 treatment and isolation centre.
The Assembly with support from a sister city, Freiburg in Germany, has been providing the polyclinic with medical supplies since the outbreak of COVID-19.
The donations which are tailored towards specific requests and needs of the facility are aimed at better equipping the clinic in the wake of the pandemic.
In July 2020, the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah in his sessional address at the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the 7th Assembly disclosed that the AMA was going to construct a two-story isolation centre at the Kaneshie Polyclinic.
Addressing the media after a presentation of medical supplies to the management of the facility on Thursday, August 5, 2021, Mr. Sowah enumerated what the Assembly has been doing since the declaration.
“Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, we’ve supplied the Kaneshie Polyclinic, the Mamprobi Polyclinic, and then the Ussher Polyclinic a lot of medical supplies. The hospital was built some years back and there’s been serious congestion over here. So we’re expanding the hospital infrastructure by providing a theatre block and then a recovery ward as well as an emergency ward for them.”
“It will be completed within a couple of months so that they can provide more essential services to the people within the (enclave) and by so doing they are reducing pressure also on the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital,” he explained.
He also spoke on what the Assembly is doing to ensure compliance with the COVID-19 safety protocols following the President’s last address on the pandemic.
“Currently our metro guards are in town, and we’ll be working with the police as well, especially in the Central business district, to insist on compliance on people wearing the nose masks. Admittedly, some time back, people dropped their guard, and we are at the moment stepping up the enforcement.”
“And it’s a warning sign to all of us especially the daily data that comes from the Ghana Health Service points to a surge in the numbers and certainly, the surest way of fighting it is to comply with the protocols,” he said.
He added that the Assembly’s plans to complete the emergency and theatre blocks of the Polyclinic are to position the facility to help in the COVID-19 fight.
“But we’re also here so that in the event that somebody falls sick and comes to the hospital there should be an isolation ward that will take care of the person and that’s why we are providing the medical supplies”, he stated.
The Mayor took the opportunity to inspect progress on the construction of the theatre block, recovery ward, and emergency ward.
