The essential components of the project include education, hygiene practices, behavioural change and enhancement of good sanitation practices to ensure that people avoid contracting diseases.

The intervention was also to increase access to water supply with the emphasis on low-income urban communities while residents got affordable toilets facilities in their homes and schools.

The six-year project has helped residents to rely on the use of public places of convenience and stopped open defecation which exposes the citizen to health risks.

Mr George Asiedu, a Consultant and Coordinator of the GAMA-SWP, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the construction of toilet facilities and connection of water into homes are part of measures which were put in place against disease infections such as the coronavirus.

He enumerated some of the achievements made include the provision of 260 toilet facilities to schools in Accra while solar system mechanised boreholes were constructed in various homes.

Mr Asiedu said under the project, the Ghana Water Company Limited has provided 10,000 new water connections to homes in Accra serving over 240,000 people while over 27,000 households have benefitted from toilet facilities at affordable cost.

"It is not far from concluding that the GAMA-SWP interventions has helped to significantly minimise the spread of COVID-19,"

The Consultant called for an extension of the project to the entire nation to support all Ghanaians who do not have access to improved water supply and sanitation facilities.
