Professor Yaw Agyeman Badu, Former Rector, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has urged increased productivity of individuals within the society especially in education since it forms a key aspect of production. He said this at the 24th Congregation held by the Ghana Technology University College in Accra.
He said that education was a key drive of technology which has resulted in technological developments and innovations. He again noted that education increased productivity by improving the skills and abilities of a workforce thereby enhancing efficiency and effectiveness .
He added that the GTUC's choice of the theme "Becoming A Public University: Expectations And Responsibilities of GTUC for Ghana's Economic Development" emphasizes the university's role in the country's future.
On the university's imminent public status, Professor Badu said that it would open doors for the school and heighten public awareness.
"GTUC will be expected to contribute massively to the nation's economy" he noted.
He also told the graduates not to depend solely on their degrees but to develop their professional and practical capacities as well.
President of GTUC, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa in his speech said that the Ghana Technology University Bill 2017 was before parliament and would soon be passed to make the university fully public.
This, he said, would allow them issue their own certificates, charge competitive public university fees as well as receive government's support to aid in their development.
As part of efforts to promote academic excellence, the university has partnered other academic institutions locally and internationally. They have also instituted the GTUC President's Scholarship and the The Barclays Bank Scholarship to support brilliant but needy students.
Professor Afoakwa noted that the school was in dire need of a library, laboratory and a hostel and urged government to support them with new and modern infrastructural facilities and laboratories.
Internationally, the school has partnered Coventry University UK, Alborg University Denmark, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Germany, CASS European Institute of Management Studies (CASS EUROPE) France, among others.
They have again signed agreements with Ghent University in Belgium, Jiangsu University Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province China.
