As part of the efforts to advance students' progress both in and outside the classroom, the management of the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) has approved the school's Student Representative Council's (SRC) request for the construction of a 5 Aside Artificial Turf on the school's park in Tesano, Accra.
The Acting Chancellor of the Univesity, Mr Emmanuel Ohene-Afoakwa made this known at a sod-cutting ceremony for its construction at a cost of GHC250,000 through the school's endowment fund.
He expressed the school's commitment to ensuring students and staff are given the right environment for studying and relaxation.
He added that other structures were in place to establish a sports facility that will allow students to engage in other activities such as volley ball and hockey. He said that the school has partnered with Vodafone to provide internet services to solve the current internet problems they are facing.
Mr Ohene-Afoakwa said that three eight-storey buildings are also under construction to solve accommodation challenges for students and with additional rooms for lectures.
He disclosed that GTUC is collaborating with government and will soon become a full public university and is working to position itself as the best public university in the country.
The first female SRC President Ms Pamela Aboagyewaa Mantey expressed joy at the commencement of the project saying that it conforms with the university's mandate to create a conducive atmosphere for students' well-being. She said that the project will also serve as a recreational center for the school and would be rented out to generate more funds for other projects as well as the maintenance of the facility.
For all projects to succeed, Miss Mantey called for an active collaboration between the SRC and management.
Nana Antwi, Manager for the Wembley Sports Complex Construction Limited, contractors for the project commended the SRC for being the first University in Ghana to construct an artificial turf. Describing the quality of the grass, Mr Antwti noted that the CCGrass will be used because it has the number one ranking on the Fédération Internationale de Football Association's (FIFA) list adding that it comes with a 12 year warranty and urged other SRCs to follow suit.
Mr Enoch Aboagye, Speaker of the SRC's General Assembly said that the project was a result of successful consultations with Mr Ohene-Afoakwa who offered to assist the SRC to construct the turf describing it as a "contribution to growth outside the classroom".
The scope of work includes an artificial grass football pitch measuring 700 square meters, a panel mesh fencing and floodlights. It is expected to be handed over after completion in January 2020.
