Ghana is on the up with an economy that is growing at an average of 8% a year. That puts Ghana as one of the fastest growing countries in Africa. Someone recently described Ghana as “hot property” in Africa. This point does ring true; Ghana has a rapidly expanding growth rate and a stable government with a population growth rate sitting at about 2.2%. For Africa as a whole to succeed we need to foster a healthy and safe environment for future generations. Sport is a fantastic way of teaching discipline, positivity, staying healthy and being a team player. Growing sport in Africa is not only good for the economy of the continent but also good for the citizens.
Corporate companies have an obligation to give back through to the community and in Ghana. Although Ghana has been competing in different sporting events ranging from all over the world it is football that’s our passion. Our Black Stars did unfortunately not do so well in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt and we did not win a medal in the 2016 Olympics. One company that is at the front end of giving back to the community is Betway. Betway opened its doors in Ghana in 2016 and had been on the forefront of sports betting in Ghana since. The company prides itself on giving back to community. They come up with smart ways of giving and bringing about change in society. The biggest contributions made have to be in sport and in football in particular but the initiatives differ. 2019 saw the Betway Fintech Challenge which was aimed at young and upcoming entrepreneurs showcasing their creativity in finding solutions in financial services. The competition saw ten start-up companies pitch their ideas to the judges. The competition concluded in May and saw the winners walking away with GH?20,000 as their prize.
Betway Talent Search was introduced in Ghana in 2017. The competition aims at finding new talent in football. Young aspiring football players from around have the chance to show what they are made of. The concept’s leader and head coach is Stephen Appiah that scouts the country along with other coaches to look for new talent. Betway organised free medical check-ups to citizens of Adabraka in Accra in 2018. Residents received; eye examinations, breast cancer examination and blood pressure testing. Medical equipment along with mosquito nets were also provided to Princess Marie Children's Hospital on World Malaria Day. Companies need to come up with uplifting ways to give back and Betway is leading the charge.
