The beneficiaries included school children, children under 5 years of age and pregnant women.

The theme for this year's celebration was "Zero Malaria Starts with Me".

Addressing a durbar to climax the event at Saint Peter's Anglican School park at Akoon, Mr. Robert Siaw, the Sustainable Development Manager of Gold Fields, urged those who were given the bed nets to sleep under them at all times to prevent mosquito bites.

He said this, would reduce the number of malaria disease that continued to kill people worldwide.

Mr. Siaw said since 2015, Gold Fields Ghana had joined Ghana Health Service and the country at large to commemorate the World Malaria Day with different forms of activities.

"We have been involved in the sensitization on malaria prevention and distribution of long lasting insecticide treated bed nets to the most vulnerable citizens in our host communities".

According to Mr. Siaw, Gold Fields had spent close to US $50 million in community development, and said "this year alone, Gold Fields has committed US $ 5 million to social investment projects in Tarkwa".

He announced that the Gold Fields Foundation Board had approved for the purchased of a well-equipped ambulance for the Apinto government hospital.

The Municipal Health Director of Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mr. Emmanuel Affelkum lauded Gold Fields for supporting the Directorate to minimize the incidence of malaria in the municipality.

The Apinto Gyasehene, Nana Dr. Adarkwa Bediako III, emphasised that it was necessary for every Ghanaian to take keen interest in the fight against malaria by ensuring that their environment were clean.
