Mr. Bediako Kwadwo Banahene, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Sekyere Central District, has appealed for more veterinary staff and logistics in the District, to help achieve the objectives of government's Rearing for Food and Jobs (RFJ) programme.
He said the District had the potential to contribute significantly to the livestock industry, which had to be harnessed with the deployment of adequate veterinary personnel to provide professional guidance for the numerous livestock keepers in the District.
The DCE who made the appeal through the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said there was only one veterinary officer currently working in the District with about 6,000 people rearing livestock.
He disclosed that the 2010 population census put the number of livestock, in the district at 83,432 and insisted that the number had increased after eight years.
Mr Banahene said with the huge number of livestock, it was imperative to establish veterinary clinics, provide storage facilities and adequate vaccines to address the needs of livestock keepers in the District.
He said the Assembly was committed to supporting the RFJ programme which could have positive economic impact on virtually every household, if well implemented.
This, he noted, would be successful only if the requisite staff and facilities were available and accessible.
He therefore called for a deliberate effort to provide the needed expertise and facilities to harness the potentials in the district in line with the vision of the RFJ.
