Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister for the Interior, on Wednesday described the outbreak of violence at Chereponi in the North East Region as regrettable.
He said in order to address the situation in Chereponi, there was the need to deal with the leadership of the two ethnic groups involving the Konkombas and the Anufors and therefore, appealed to them to educate their people to allow peace to prevail.
Mr Dery made the appeal during a News interaction on the sidelines of the Ministry's 2018 Annual Review Meeting in Accra.
He said the Government had involved the leadership of both ethnic groups in the Committee for their conflict resolution, which had already submitted its report and the two ethnic groups would be involved in the implementation of the report of the Committee.
Mr Dery said moving forward, the leadership of both sides would need to educate their people on the ground on what transpired.
"Because it is about land and if it is about land, the law is clear, you go through due process. But it appears that there is suspicion and the only way the suspicion can be handled effectively is apart from the police and soldiers on the grounds, which they are; that the leadership of both groups must step forward and make sure their people live in peace."
He said for instance an event comes up in village A and then there was retribution in village D, far away.
"What happens is that you have the security people at the point of potential conflict and yet it is spilling over. And if it is spilling over, because there is a certain level of suspicion and that level of suspicion must be nipped in the bud," Mr Dery said.
"And that is the way we're thinking of going forward. The police and the soldiers are there, reinforcement has been sent and we will continue to do that but we're talking about the sustainable peace and the sustainable peace must be participatory. And the people concerned must begin to move away."
He said the historical enskinment and installation of the Ya- Na, and the subsequent enskinment of the leading Princes of Dagbon had practically restored peace by and large to Dagbon.
He appealed to the media to continue to play its role as a partner with the Government in promoting peace, security and development.
