Mortuary workers within the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis on Tuesday joined the nationwide strike action to press home their demands for better working conditions.
A visit to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital morgue and the European hospital morgues confirmed that staff of the morgues have indeed laid down their working needles, buckets and other instrument for embalmment.
Mr John Kuma, the assistant in charge of the Effia-Nkwanta morgue, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that workers of the facility deserve to be respected and accorded their due pay rise and also improve upon their working conditions.
Mr Kuma, who has been working for 12 years, said his take home pay was only GHC 317 to cater for his entire family.
He said he has worked as a casual worker for all these years contrary to the labour law which stipulates six months as the casual period.
The morgue assistant said they lacked working gear including, wellington boots and scrubbing brushes.
He said considering the nature of their job they needed more hand gloves, but they were not given the number they requested adding that this was not helping their work.
Mr Kwaadae, a morgue attendant, said as a permanent worker he has been working for the past 19 years with GHC 550 as his monthly salary.
He said they were not being paid certain allowances such as risk allowance and emergency allowances.
The situation was not different at the European hospital when the GNA visited there as mortuary attendants were seen sitting idle in front of the morgue but declined to speak to the reporters.
More so management were in a meeting as of the time of visit.
Mr Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG, said the failure of the Health Ministry to give them a date to negotiate their emoluments with the fair wages and salaries led to their current position.
Mr Jordan said "the mortuaries are going to be closed down and people should not expect any workers".
He said "the Ministry of Health is taking us for a ride, they don't take us serious and we are not ready to die before we start enjoying what we are supposed to enjoy, we know the conditions under which we work and we cannot wait any longer".
He said besides their low salary, they also did not have the needed logistics and everything is being done manually.
