His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed an Executive Instrument to allow for work to commence on the Port of Keta according to the Minister of Fishries and Aquaculture Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye at the launch of the 2019 Norvikporgbe Za Festival at the British Council in Accra. The annual festival will be held during Easter on the theme "Harnessing Local Resources For Socio-Economic Development".
She noted that government as part of its 2016 manifesto recognized the potential of adding another port facility to the already existing two ports in Tema and Takoradi. She said that establishing the port in the Keta enclave will generate employment and attract foreign investment as well as serve as an instrument for oil exploration.
She added that in line with government's industrialization policies for employment generation and foreign exchange earnings, the inhabitants have taken the lead in identifying the needs of the community through the festival. She said that government is aware of potentials such as suitable sites for port establishment, potential for fisheries, abundance of marine and brackish water and potential for tourism.
Madam Quaye said that the festival collates views fom both investors and inhabitants in the area on the potentials of Kedzi and its environment which will allow government to provide them with the necessary needs rather than impose projects on the people. She lauded the Member of Parliament for the area and the inhabitants for the clean sandy beaches and serene atmosphere.
In his welcome address, Togbui Joachim Acolatse V, Dufia of Kedzi said that the presence of the various stakeholders at the launch indicates the interest of Ghanaians in developing the Kedzi community. He said that the Norvikporgbe Za Festival allows for dialogues and planning of socio-economic projects that provide development for the Kedzi community as well as bring together people living locally and abroad. It also showcases their rich culture.
Tobui Acolatse noted that each year a special development project is selected for the community. For 2019, he disclosed that the identification of potential resources especially the coastal line influenced the selection of the theme. He said that the signing of the executive instrument by His Excellency Akufo-Addo has opened up an opportunity for the people of Kedzi to utilize their natural resources to fuel economic development.
He urged all to visit the area and experience the breath taking views, bird watching arena and speed boat rides among others and invited investors to take advantage of these opportunities especially the habour project.
Mr Komla Ofori, an engineer from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) said that the GPHA has gone through the necessary legal processes to acquire the area for the port project. He advised the inhabitants for the area not to be alarmed at the sights of ships and foreigners during and after work is completed. He said that the Port of Keta will have two areas that is, the Commercial Port area and the Leisure Port area also known as the Marina.
Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Richard Quashigah said that the eagerness of Tobgui Acolatse to see the development of Kedzi gives him the assurance that the initiatives planned for Kedzi will come to fruition. "I am confident this project will open up our area and provide jobs for the youth who are deprived" he said.
Present at the launch of the festival were other Chiefs from the Volta region, representatives from the American Embassy, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Kingdom of Morocco and the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority as well as Members of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gas Company and inhabitants of Kedzi.
