This, he said, would ensure effective and efficient management of traffic lights and ease heavy congestion. Mr Amoako-Attah, who announced this when he took his turn at the Meet-the-Press series in Accra on Tuesday, said the traffic monitoring system was currently being constructed by the Department of Urban Roads.

The media encounter enabled the Minister to render account of his stewardship for the past two years.  He gave the assurance that the traffic situation would improve tremendously once the 3.5 million-dollar project becomes operational in June.

Mr Amoako-Attah noted that the project intended to coordinate all the traffic signals along the major roads in Accra and manage traffic lights at the central control unit. He said it would optimise flow of traffic from Amasaman to the Central Business District and other major corridors in Accra.

The project, which is 61 per cent complete, is being funded by the AFD and would come on stream by June. Mr Amoako-Atta gave the assurance that upon completion all the intermittent blackouts experienced at the various traffic intersections would be a thing of the past.

"All the traffic lights will be working and if any of them goes off, it will immediately be detected at the control centre and within minutes people will be there to fix it,” he said.   Mr Amoako-Atta assured motorists and all other road users that the Ministry would make the road safer for use and reduce the time they spend in traffic.

“The situation of accidents at road intersections and people getting knocked down because of a traffic light not working will be no more from June this year,” he said.
