The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA), in partnership with Abidjan – Lagos Corridor Organisation (ALCO), and the Ghana AIDS Commission, has held a sensitisation programme on HIV and its Testing Services.
The programme was for long distance commercial drivers, bus conductors, and persons living around the enclave of the Tema Harbour.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Madam Rita Afriyie, the Technical Coordinator of Ghana AIDS Commission, Greater Accra Region, said the HIV sensitisation programme was part of GHAPOHA and ALCO’s efforts in fast tracking the UNAIDS Global 90-90-90 agenda in ending HIV and AIDS by 2020.
The statement said as part of GHAPOHA’s social responsibility, it was committed to ensuring that 90 per cent of long distance drivers and their conductors got to know their HIV status. It noted that 90 per cent of those who had tested positive would be enrolled and sustained in care.
It added that 90 per cent of those enrolled onto care would achieve viral suppression. The participants were educated on the importance of knowing their HIV status and encouraged to be confident to protect themselves by always insisting on the use of condom anytime they were to engage in sexual intercourse.
Participants were also educated on how to report gender-based violence and signs of Sexually Transmitted Infections to the appropriate authorities. The HIV patients were also advised to adhere to treatment and medical counselling to improve on their health.
