Medeama FM based in Tarkwa has organized a blood donation exercise to support the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital Blood Bank.
The exercise geared towards stocking the Hospital’s Blood Bank took place on the premises of the radio station in Tarkwa.
The event saw more than 150 people donating blood voluntarily.
Mr. Charles Koffie, the General Manager of Medeamaa FM, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the exercise was in response to a request the Hospital made to the FM station.
He said the Municipal Health Director appealed to them and explained that patients who visited their facility ended up losing their lives as a result of blood shortages.
According to him, the Hospital told the FM station that children under five year-old, pregnant women and accident victims were those who suffered the most in terms of blood shortages.
Mr Koffie said the exercise was organised as part of celebrations marking the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's birthday, which falls on September 21 of every year.
“We decided to partner the Municipal Health Directorate to embark on the exercise to sustain the Blood Bank,” he added.
He announced that, as part of Medeamaa FM's corporate social responsibilities; management would make this programme an annual event.
Mr Emmanuel Osei, the Head of Laboratory and Blood Bank at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, who supervised the exercise, expressed satisfaction with the turnout.
"At the moment the stock is very low that is why we are organizing this exercise so we are calling on all to participate so that there will be enough blood at the Blood Bank," He stressed.
Mr Osei expressed anticipation by the station to organise health exercises at least once in every month to promote healthy living as well as being each other’s keeper in the Municipality.
