A three day Regional Development Forum organised by the International Telecommunication Union and the Ministry of Communication on the theme "ICT 4 SDGs : Towards the implementation of WTDC17 outcomes" at the Accra International Conference Center.
The event saw about 200 to 250 attendees from across Africa, with presentations and break out groups during sessions offering incite on projects, strategy and policy planning for digital economies in Africa among others. The Forum also witnessed various sessions including high-level round table discussion on boosting digital economy development in Africa.
The Deputy Minister for Communication; Honourable George Andah said the breakout sessions at the event focused on other areas including the Regional initiatives which are: The building of digital economies and fostering of innovation in Africa, promotion of emerging broadband technologies, the building of trust and security in the use of telecommunications/information and communication technology, strengthening human and institutional capacity building as well as management and monitoring of the radio-frequency spectrum and transition to digital broadcasting.
"For us in Ghana we will put together a working group made up of all stakeholders, Government, Regulator, the private sector and academia among others to critically review the various projects and determine how to adapt and implement it as we continue on our digital Ghana agenda and move towards the achievements of the SDGs".
In his closing remarks, RTU Regional Director for Africa Mr Andrew Rugege said the forum has meant alot for the ITU. "What we went through in reviewing what happened last year has given us the oppourtunity to look at the way forward. He thanked attendees for making it one of the most productive RDF's ever had." He hoped what was discussed will be a bedrock for the implementation of all initiatives. He promised to follow on the initiatives because there are those who doubt Africa's capabilities. Mr Rugege stated further that the labs which have been created in Ghana is now being made available to other countries to use especially in the issues of capacity building. "We have an oppourtunity to use these labs for training and to support the efforts of one of us.
Director General for National Communications Authority ; Mr Joseph Anokye expressed gratitude to the ITU for the forum and also for his election as chairman. "I believe one can leave here with a wealth of knowledge and experiences". He emphasised the need to ensure cyber security
Present at the three day event was the Minister of Communication ,Honorable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful who emphasised the need to build a resilient broadband infrastructure across the continent, provide the requisite IT(Information Technology) knowledge and skills for Africans especially the youth and position them to take advantage of oppourtunities provided by the multi-billion applications and software industry.
She concluded by saying there is the need to focus on how technology is impacting, easing how business and communication is done, assisting in education, health etcetera.
Also present were Minister for Information; Honourable Mustapha Hamid, Director for ITU Telecommunication Bureau Development ; Mr Brahima Sanou, The Regional Director for ITU ; Mr Andrew Rugege, Director General for National Communications Authority ; Mr Joseph Anokye, Deputy Minister for Communication; Honourable George Andah, President for the Osu Traditional Council and Greater Accra House of Chiefs ; Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, representatives form the ITU, beneficiaries at the Accra Digital Center who gave their testimonies as well as stakeholders and representatives in the Information Communication Industry.
