The Zonta Club of Accra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to provide the Chenard Ward of the facility with medical support for 10 years.
This would involve the supply of medical equipment and consumables alongside funds to efficiently manage the ‘adopted ward’ to improve the quality of care for pregnant women and children.
Chenard Ward has been closed down for some time now and undergoing refurbishment.
Nana Oforiwa Koranteng, the District 18 Zonta Foundation Ambassador and Project Team Leader, told journalists during an inspection of the Ward to assess the progress of work, that the phase one of the project was expected to be ready by the end of the month.
It would bring comfort and help to save the lives of women suffering from cancer and abortion related-cases.
She applauded the Australian Embassy, GCB and members of the Club for the noble cause of assisting to raise the quality healthcare.
She invited other institutions and NGO’s to emulate to complement the government’s effort.
Dr. Ali Samba, the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, thanked the Zonta Club for the support.
He indicated that the Chenard Ward had been receiving between 1,500 and 2,000 patients every year and said through technological advancement, partnerships and strategies put in place by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service the complication rate of cases had drastically reduced.
He said the intervention was a big relief and would enable them to significantly improve on the quality of service.
