The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development has facilitated the payment of Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) to 291 persons with disability from four communities under the programme in the Bolgatanga Municipal.
Mrs Mercy Pwadra, the Municipal Director of the department, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga after the payments, said a total amount of Ghc 22,000 was received out of which Ghc 20,000 was disbursed to the beneficiaries for the first quarter of the year.
She said 10 more beneficiaries, who were not present during the payment, were yet to receive their money.
Mrs Pwadra said there was a possibility that the absentee beneficiaries had travelled out of their communities but they could still cash out from any E-zwich point of payment.
She noted some beneficiaries had severe disabilities that required them to be supported to the payment points, adding that LEAP had made it possible for members who could not turn up on the scheduled payment days to cash out with their member cards at any of the paying bank branches.
She said the department was responsible for ensuring that all beneficiaries received their payments as scheduled.
On whether the Municipal office was not registering new members on the programme, she said a process had begun by her outfit to select more qualified beneficiaries on to the LEAP and would soon include four more communities from the Municipality.
She was satisfied with the timely disbursement of funds and indicated that it was a great support to beneficiaries because of their various incapacities.
She said the intervention helped beneficiaries to meet their financial challenges especially for their care and added that since the LEAP started in 2010, payments had been very successful.
