The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra as part of activities marking its 125th Anniversary Celebrations has held a commemorative Mass in Accra to mark the first ever Holy Mass .
The Mass brought together thousands of Catholic faithful and priests to commemorate the day and rejoice in the Lord for His guidance and protection.
Most Reverend Anthony Kwami Adanuty, the first Emeritus Bishop of the Keta-Akatsi Diocese, in his homily, called on Catholic faithful to foster and deepen spiritual growth in Jesus Christ, with the correct knowledge and intellectual appreciation of the Catholic Faith.
Most Rev. Adanuty urged members to renew their commitment to the evangelisation and the spirit of fellowship and communion.
He added that the call to new evangelisation was not about changing the message for propagation but finding more effective and expedient ways of spreading God's message unchanged to a world that keeps changing.
He further noted that commemorating the first Mass of the Archdiocese was not for the remembrance of the past, but a call for Catholics in the Archdiocese to renew their commitment to evangelisation.
This, he said would go a long way to compliment what Rev. Fathers Hilberer and Raess started 125 years ago.
The commemorative Mass was followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and a candle light procession from the John Evans Attah Mills high street to the oldest Catholic Church in Accra, Sacred Heart Parish, Derby Avenue.
The year-long celebration which started from Saturday December 2, 2017 to Sunday November 25, 2018 was under the theme: “125 Years of Catholic Mission in Accra: Renewing Our Commitment to Evangelism’’. The slogan for the anniversary is: ‘’Arise Catholic Faithful, Rejoice and Renew’’.
The Anniversary has seen activities such as rosary pilgrimages, vespers, a focus on children as God’s gift to the Archdiocese, brass band, carnival and cultural display and Episcopal Silver Jubilee of Archbishop Palmer-Buckle.
Other activities to be held are; Children’s week, Health awareness, Blood donation and Public lectures.
The year-long celebration would be climaxed with a Holy Mass at the Black Star Square on Sunday November 25, 2018.
Activities of the anniversary are aimed at three goals indispensable to the mission of the new evangelisation.
The Catholic Church in Accra began with the first Holy Mass on January 31, 1893 by Reverend Fathers Otoo Hilberer and Eugene Raes, two priests of the Society of African Missions who were sent from the Elmina Mission that had started in 1880.
