He said the police, by virtue of their profession, were expected to protect life and property and needed assistance to effectively enforce rules and regulations for conducive atmosphere and healthy living.

Mr Ashietey gave the advice when the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah took him round to inspect some of the areas the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) had undertaken the decongestion exercise.

“I was so impressed with the work done so far despite the fact that I wasn’t part of it,” the Minister said, adding that; “I didn’t know the MCE has done such a good work” and urged him to continue to ensure that the traders get out of the streets and occupy their sheds.

He assured of his fullest support in the ongoing exercise to decongest and make the towns in the region clean and healthy, saying that, it was the surest guarantee of good health for the people.

The Minister hinted that the decongestion exercise would be extended to Adenta, Madina and Tema.

Mr Adjei Sowah told the Ghana News Agency that he was happy the traders themselves had complied with the directives and abandoned the pavements and the streets peacefully, which had made Kaneshie and other areas tidy.

He called on Ghanaians to keep the environment hygienic to promote good health, adding that, it was the only way to support the work of the AMA.

“If we change our attitude and create a clean and healthy environment, things would be better for us all,” he said, adding that; “let us stop playing politics with environmental issues and unnecessary criticisms and focus on doing things that would make Accra the cleanest city.”
