Mr Salifu Baba Yahaya, Regional Secretary of the Bolgatanga Tricycle Riders Association, on Wednesday said the introduction of the Tricycles popularly called "Mahama Cam Boo" as commercial means of transport has created employment for a number of the youth in the Upper East Region.
He said since the inception of the Tricycles in the region as alternative means of transport, many people, especially the youth have been enrolled into the business which has reduced the unemployment menace confronting the region.
Speaking exclusively to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bolgatanga, Mr Yahaya explained that most people in the region had difficulties in making earns meet because they were unemployed or could not find anything lucrative to do, and said the introduction of the Tricycle business had saved owners, riders and their families from starving each day.
The Regional Secretary further said the introduction of the Mahama Cam Boo had made transiting very easy and convenient to the people of Bolgatanga and beyond.
He added that even though the Mahama Cam Boo business is opened to every citizen, minors were not allowed to engage in the business as riders.
He said as part of measures to ensure that minors were not engaged as riders, the Association strictly demands Voter's ID cards from applicants who apply to become members, adding that where minors are found riding the tricycle, owners of such tricycles would have been presumed to have committed offence and so the minor rider is arrested and the owner dealt with according to the laws and principles governing their operations.
He further disclosed that there was effective collaboration between the Ghana Police Service in the region and leaders of the Association in sensitizing and sanitizing the business through education of members on how to run their businesses smoothly.
Mr Yahaya urged government to equip the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) in the region to import more of the tricycle for the youth to reduce the rate of unemployment in the region and said it would go a long way to reduce poverty which was a major canker in the region.
He admonished government to enact laws that would make their business legitimate under the transportation Laws and further roll out policies that would enhance their businesses, especially the provision of security against robberies at night.
