Alhaji Issahaku Ibrahim, a Focal Person of Citizens Monitoring Committee at Savelugu in the Northern Region, on Tuesday disclosed that corruption perception in the Savelugu Municipality has increased in the last 12 months.
According to him, the citizens in the Municipality observed that the Assembly and other anti-corruption institutions were not making efforts to fight corruption.Alhaji Ibrahim disclosed this during a policy dialogue workshop on corruption survey.
The event, which was organised by SEND-Ghana, School for Life (SfL) and District Citizens Monitoring Committee, was to increase documentation and exposure of corruption through Civil Society reporting mechanisms.The dialogue was to discuss the outcome of the corruption survey with stakeholders and the public to see how best the menace could be addressed.
He said there was high perception that the Ghana Police Service, Political Parties and the Judiciary were the most corrupt institutions in the country.He also mentioned that the Lands Commission, Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority, Health and Education Services were among perceived corrupt institutions, which the survey captured.
Alhaji Ibrahim said religious bodies, NGO’s and the Media were the least corrupt institutions in the country.He said some citizens paid bribes to speed up things or facilitate processes of documents and also to avoid problems with authorities.
He urged the Assembly to ensure and establish a culture of zero tolerance for bribery in the Municipality.Alhaji Ibrahim advised the Assembly to investigate corrupt acts and its related offences and administer the appropriate sanctions timely to build public confidence.Mr Mumuni Mohammed, Programme Officer of SEND-Ghana called on stakeholders to promote good governance and fight corruption in the country.
