The advice comes a day after fire gutted a three-storey building near the Kumasi Central Market and the offices of Ashfoam in North Industrial Area, in Accra, destroying items worth millions of Ghana Cedis.

The Accra Metropolitan Commander of the GNFS, Divisional Officer (DOI) Lily Ashong-Robertson, gave the advice yesterday in an interview with The Ghanaian Times, on the sidelines of street procession by the command, as part of this year’s Fire Safety Week.

Amidst brass band music, the procession started from the GNFS office, through Kantamanto market, Rawlings Park, Makola Market, Tudu, Post Office and back to the office, during which some personnel spoke to the traders.

Others distributed stickers with fire safety tips, to drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

DOI Ashong-Robertson stressed the need for public education as prevention was always the best option.

On fire situation at the Makola Market, she said the service had installed and serviced fire hydrants, to facilitate the fight against fire.

Expressing worry over the fire outbreaks on Monday, DOI Ashong-Robertson said the two incidents should be a wake-up call to all traders in the country to be vigilant.
