The General Nursing and Midwives Trainee Association (GNMTA) of the Bawku Presbyterian Nursing Training College has marked its annual week celebrations with public education on Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) and Hepatitis B in Bawku of the Upper East Region.
The move was to educate the public on the need to live in an airy and clean environment to avoid being infected with the CSM and Hepatitis B virus as they have become rampant in the country.
The activity was championed by students who are members of the Association, some staff members of the College and students who have come for industrial attachment practical work with the aim to fight meningitis, Hepatitis B and promote good sanitation in the area.
The annual week celebration begun on Monday with activities including cleaning up exercise, and public education on the need for good sanitation in the area and to completely eradicate open defecation in the area to avoid the spread of diseases such as malaria and cholera among others.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ghana at 60, the role of the trainee nurse in quality health delivery for national development”.
Mr Jabal Osumani, the General Secretary for the Association in the college, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku said the exercise was focused at educating the residents to practice good sanitation habits and to be mindful of keeping their surroundings clean to avoid the outbreak of epidemics in the Bawku area, saying most of the diseases in the area could be attributed to poor hygiene.
Mr Aaron Asaasim, the Public Relations officer (PRO) of the Association, said the members had embarked on a health outreach programme to educate the people on reproductive health and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s) among others in the Bawku area.
He said the students would comport themselves and be disciplined throughout the one week celebration.
He called on philanthropist, nongovernmental organizations, and individuals to support the celebrations as it was part of activities to showcase the potential of the nursing profession and the Association.
