The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has held an open day as part of activities to mark the nation’s 60th Independence Day Anniversary in all military garrisons throughout the country and the Jungle Warfare School.
The Day gave an opportunity for school children and the public to interact with the Armed Forces as well as have access to their facilities, which are not often open to the public. Lieutenant Colonel Eric Aggrey-Quashie, the GAF Director of Public Relations, told the Ghana News Agency that the open Day activities had become part of the Independence Day celebrations.
He said activities for the day included Photo Exhibitions, Demonstrations and Equipment Displays, briefings, Horseback riding, Air and Sea experiences, as well as fun games. “It is also to clean the doubts in the minds of the public concerning the way the Military operates,” he added. The Director said it was expected that between 2,500 and 3,000 kids and adults would take part in the activities lined-up for the day.
He said Military units in Accra and other garrisons across the country were made accessible to the public. Many people toured the Air Force Base and the Naval Base. Children and the public were given the opportunity to fly in helicopters, coppers and Fokker 27, while others were given a treat in armoured vehicles and on horseback.
Equipment for the forces such as military aircrafts, and armoured vehicles just to mention a few were put on display for the public.
