A–12–years old primary five pupil of the Bongo Bion Primary School in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region , Miss Latifa Baba, has appealed to Ghanaians to change their attitude towards work to help accelerate the development of the country.
Reciting a poem entitled, “Mother Ghana,” during the 60th Independence Day celebration at the Bongo District, Miss Baba said it was regrettable that after 60 years of independence, the country was endemic with negative attitudes such as corruption and degradation of the environment.
She said such attitudes were not only affecting the development of the country, but also had the tendency of jeopardizing the younger generation. She said Ghana was endowed with a lot of natural resources such as gold, bauxite, cocoa and called for the proper management and preservation of the natural resources to cater for the youth in the near future.
“As we celebrate the 60th Independence Anniversary Day, we must all as Ghanaians, particularly those entrusted with leadership responsibilities, reflect on how to make Ghana a better place to live, devoid of negative attitudes that will retard the development of the country,” she said.
Another 11 years old primary five pupil of the Saint Anne Roman Catholic School, Miss Roselina Apasinaba, in her poem, called on Ghanaians to cherish their own culture instead of copying foreign culture blindly. She stressed the need for Ghanaians to patronize African culture by consuming made in Ghana goods to help promote the growth of the Ghanaian economy.
School children from both basic and second cycle institutions, security agencies and teachers among others participated in the event, which was characterized by match pass, cultural display, poetry recital and acrobatic display.
The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Alemyaarum, lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo for expressing concern about the depletion of lakes and rivers in the country and calling for its reverse.
He said the President’s call was a wake-up call on all Ghanaians to help preserve the environment and impressed upon his other chiefs to lead the crusade, stressing that “the Bongo traditional area has initiated an environmental project in the Bongo District dubbed “The Green Bongo Project.”
The President’s speech which among other things condemned the act of indiscipline and praised the gallant forefathers who fought for the Independence of Ghana was read by the District Coordinating Director, Mr Akaditi Ayambire.
