MIHOSO International, a health centered non-governmental organisation has presented assorted drugs worth GHC 50,000 to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Directorate of Health Services.
The drugs are to be supplied free to mental health patients placed on medication at the various public health institutions. They include; resperidons, quieteiapine fumerates, divalproex, gabapentine, olanzepine/fluxetin and hydrochloride.
BasicNeeds Ghana, another international NGO funding a five-year project on mental health implemented by the MIHOSO in the Brong-Ahafo Region procured the drugs for the distribution.
Dr Gabriel Gbiel Bernakuu, the Chief Executive Director of MIHOSO, expressed concern about the surge in alcoholism and Indian hemp smoking among teenagers which had contributed to high cases of mental health in the region. That notwithstanding, he added that patients could be treated if they adhered to the drugs and entreated parents and relatives to assist them to take the drugs.
He said the project, which was implemented in 18 districts and municipalities in the region was in the fourth year and had achieved some good results. Mr Joseph Yere, the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator of mental health thanked the donors for the gesture. He lamented that cases of epilepsy and depression were recording alarming figures in the region.
Mr Yere indicated that it was not true that mental health was linked to witchcraft but neonatal problems and drug abuse and entreated pregnant women to attend regular antenatal clinics.
