Madam Otiko Afisah Djaba, the Minister-designate of Gender and Social Protection, led Ghana’s delegation to the 55th Session of the United Nations (UN) Commission for Social Development, which opened on Wednesday, February 1.
The 10-day event, being held at the world body’s headquarters in New York, is on the theme: “Strategies for Eradicating Poverty to Achieve Sustainable Development For All.”
The Session would, therefore, provide various platforms for members of the Commission and other key stakeholders, including civil society organisations, to advance the dialogue and efforts towards the eradication of poverty.
According to official documents made available to the Ghana News Agency by the Gender Ministry, their achievements would build on the experiences gained in implementing the Copenhagen Programme of Action adopted at the World Summit for Social Development.
At high-level panel discussions, the delegates would, therefore, “share concrete policies, strategies and measures that have been effective at eradicating poverty in all of its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, and preventing people from falling into poverty in various national contexts”.
They would also - based on evidence- explore and identify “innovative approaches to eradicate poverty that can leverage the inter-linkages among the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development”.
There would also be high-level panel discussions on ‘Promoting Integrated Policies for Poverty Eradication: Youth Development in the Agenda 2020; and on Leaving No One Behind: Poverty and Disability.”
Ghana’s poverty has reduced from more than 52 per cent in 1991 to below 25 per cent, while extreme poverty is now about eight per cent.
