Postal workers in Hamilton, Ontario, are on strike after rejecting the latest contract proposal from Canada Post, officials say.
Hamilton is the second Canadian city to be hit with walkouts in rotating strikes by union postal workers, Winnipeg being the first, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The workers went on strike late Friday and are expected to return to work Sunday night.
The strikes are over contract negotiations that have been going on between the postal workers and Canada Post for seven months. The biggest concerns for the postal workers are Canada Post's modernization program, which mandates that on-foot postal workers carry two bundles instead of one on routes that are more than 9 miles a day, and cuts in sick days.
All mail delivery would cease should there by a nationwide strike, however, the rotating strikes are just slowing mail service in the affected areas.
