Mr Saladin Sumani Mahama, Northern Regional Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Ghana, has called on its volunteers to create awareness about the society for people to know about its relevance.
He said even though people knew about the Red Cross, they did not understand its operations and importance to the society.
He said some people had the wrong notion that the Red Cross was a non-governmental organisation, which should be sponsoring and taking care of all their needs.
Mr Mahama was speaking at a six-day training of disseminators’ workshop in Koforidua on Wednesday.
The workshop was aimed at training volunteers from the 10 regions to help change people’s perceptions about the society and get them to understand the operations of the Red Cross and to influence more people to join it.
He indicated that the Red Cross was a public organisation that did not make any profit from its operations.
Mr Mahama appealed to media houses to use their medium to create awareness about the Red Cross to the public.
Mr Kofi Addo, Secretary General of the Red Cross, warned the public against the misuse of society’s emblem.
The Ghana Red Cross Society was formed by one Selwyn in 1929 as the League of Maternal and Child Welfare.
The League consisted of mothers, teachers, nurses and housewives with a mission to ensure the welfare of pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as children.
