As part of measures to prevent the escalation of the cholera outbreak in the Tema Metropolis, the Metropolitan Assembly on Saturday, organised a massive clean-up exercise at the Community One Market and its environs.
Shops in the market were closed as the traders joined about 70 personnel from the First Battalion of Infantry from Mitchell Camp, Ghana National Fire Service and officials of the Assembly to rid the market of filth.
Others who joined the exercise which started at 0630 hours were members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, officials of the
National Disaster Management Organisation, assembly members and some residents.
Mr Frank Asante, Tema Metropolitan Public Relations Officer, told the Ghana News Agency that the Assembly had decided to prevent the number of cholera cases recorded in the area through a series of clean-up exercises to be carried out fortnightly in the Sub-metros.
He said apart from the aim of fighting the cholera outbreak, the exercise was also aimed at beautifying the Metropolis and to instil the culture of cleanliness in residents.
He said for the exercise to be effective, the Assembly marshalled its resources.
Mr Asante commended participants in the exercise, and urged other residents to join in the activity in future.
