Teachers have been advised to remain calm whiles the technical committee set up under the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) corrects the anomalies detected in their salaries under the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP).
Dr Kwasi Apea-Kubi, Eastern Regional Minister, who gave the advice at the weekend, appealed to the teachers to remain focused on
delivering quality educational services in their various institutions.
He was speaking in a speech read on his behalf at the launch of the Golden Jubilee Celebration organised by the Mpraeso Senior High
School (MSHS) in Accra.
It was under the theme: “Mpass at 50-Providing Quality Education for Socio-Economic Development.”
Dr Apea-Kubi said the government had implemented a number of educational reforms and interventions aimed at improving upon the
quality of education in the country.
The interventions, he noted, included: 50 per cent increase in the capitation grant, allocation of GHC13 million for expanding and
streamlining the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the 50 per cent subsidy on the Basic Education and Examination Certificate fees.
Others were free education for all physically challenged students and those with disabilities, reduction in the duration of the
Senior High School from four to three years, integration of 38 colleges into the tertiary system and the construction of two new public universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo regions.
Dr Apea-Kubi said: “the educational reform is an ample testimony of this government’s commitment to human resource development in the
country.”
Mr Sam Akurang Wiafe, President of the Past Students’ Association of MSHS, said the event served as a platform to raise funds to
rehabilitate the dilapidated school building.
He said the target for the fund-raising was GHC50, 000, stressing
that the ambition was by no means unattainable.
Mr Wiafe said the school though began with pioneer students of 42, could now boast of student population of more than 1,500.
Teachers began demonstrating when their expectation of higher salaries under the SSPP was not met, with many earning low salaries, others wrongly placed, while others were not given any placement.
Mr George Smith-Graham, Chief Executive of the FWSC, had earlier told journalists that the errors affecting about 19,000 Superintendent
One professional teachers who were wrongly placed on non-professional grades, as well as some Assistant Directors and Principal Superintendents who are heads of schools and who were placed on
different grades on the structure, were being redressed.
