Children of the Asylum Down congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, on Saturday donated items worth about GH¢2,000 to the Christ–faith Foster home at Frafraha in the Greater Accra region
The items donated included bags of rice, clothing, boxes of soap, fruit juice and an undisclosed amount of money as part of the
Children’s week celebration whose theme was: “Children as Agents of Change.”
The children ranging from age one to 18 years, solicited for the items from the adult members of the church and also made little
contributions by themselves.
Mr Festus Kofi Ohene Kwafo, Catechist in charge of the Asylum Down Congregation, who led the group, said the church wanted to inculcate into the children the spirit of giving and sharing with the less privileged in society.
“We want to teach the children that no matter how small they have, they should be able to share with others,” he said, adding that
“That is what the Bible teaches us to do”.
Mr Ohene Kwafo also advised the children in the orphanage to be obedient and respectful to their foster parents.
He said God had a way of taking care of the vulnerable and needy in society. “Therefore, consider yourselves privileged to be here and God can raise one of you to be a President in future.”
Ms Henrietta Asare-Agyeman, Assistant Supervisor at the Foster home, who received the items expressed gratitude to the congregation
for its kind gesture.
She said: “What we need most is that Christians should pray for these children and other children in foster homes to also become
‘somebody’ in future.”
The children in the orphanage are 33 in number who refer to themselves as “future stars”. They are made up of five girls, with the
rest being boys, and have challenged the Asylum Down congregation children’s service to a football match.
The children’s week celebration will be climaxed on Sunday, March 13, 2011 with a thanksgiving service.
