Two thousand four hundred and eighty six candidates have been registered to take part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in April in the Bawku Municipality.
The candidates, 1,423 boys and 1,063 girls are to write Mathematics, English Language, General Science, General Agriculture, Social Studies, Pre-Technical and Vocational Skills.
Mr Leonidas Darkora, Municipal Assistant Director of Education in charge of Supervision, on Wednesday disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku.
He said aside this, 910 candidates made up of 679 boys and 231 girls, had registered to participate in the West Africa Senior High Certificate Examination.
He said the school dropout rate in the municipality in 2010 was 2.1 percent which, according to him, was not bad, adding that the directorate was conducting a school mapping exercise for the 2011 figures.
Mr Darkora called on parents and other stakeholders to contribute to the reduction of the school dropout rate to zero as education was the bedrock of national development.
He called on the students to take their studies seriously to enable them to obtain good grades which could lead them to the senior
high schools and tertiary education institutions in the country.
Mr Musah Abduliah, Municipal Chief Executive, spelt out some educational projects such as classrooms and libraries to be constructed in some communities including Boko, Binduri, and Yaligo Communities.
The MCE noted that it was part of government’s
promise to reduce the high rate of illiteracy in the country.
He said government was committed to providing quality education to the people by making available quality and adequate educational infrastructure.
Mr Abduliah charged the community members to supervise the projects and contribute communal labour to help speed up their completion.
