The Medical Director of the Koforidua Regional Hospital, Dr Daniel Asare, has called for good remuneration for public servants as a way of helping to reduce corruption.
He said it was not enough to be talking about the negative effects of corruption but there should be a determination on the part of the citizenry and leadership to strive towards elimination.
Dr Asare said this when he addressed the Institute of Directors 14th Professional Course in Corporate Governance on how to reduce corruption to the barest minimum.
He called for a clearer definition of corruption and bribery and the enforcement of policies on bribery, corruption and gifts in organizations and institutions.
Dr Asare blamed low wages in the public sector, widespread poverty and the lack of political will on the part of leadership to effectively fight corruption.
He said corruption was a major hindrance to sustainable development and equitable allocation of resources which have disproportionate impact on poor communities, women, children and the vulnerable in the society.
Dr Asare explained that in the private sector, corruption impedes economic growth and distort competition and therefore called for more determined efforts to help fight it.
