Mr Nicholas Nimo, President of CECON, an NGO formed by accident victims has appealed to drivers to observe rules and regulations on the road to avoid rampant road accidents in the country.
CECON was formed to educate drivers and passengers on the effects of accidents, organised the workshop in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to sensitise drivers on the need to avoid drinking, making of telephone calls and unnecessary overtaking when driving.
Mr Nimo made the appeal at a workshop organised by the management of CECON for drivers and passengers at the Tema Station in Accra at the week-end.
Mr Nimo noted that major causes of road accidents could be attributed to both drivers and passengers not adhering to traffic rules and regulations.
He said the management of CECON would continue to educate the public on the need to observe road signs to save lives, adding “road safety is a shared and collective responsibility to ensure safety and harmony in the country.”
Mr Reuben Adjetey, Planning Officer at NRSC, called on drivers to refrain from using duplicate driving licences but endeavour to carry the original copies at all times.
He said it was against regulations of the Driver and Vehicle Licence Authority (DVLA) for drivers to duplicate their licences and warned that culprits would be prosecuted.
Mr Adjetey advised drivers of private cars, ambulances, hearse, as well as drivers conveying wedding couples to refrain from tooting their horns to disturb public peace.
Drivers at the station pledged to obey the rules and regulations and to maintain discipline on the road.
They suggested periodic education for drivers on road signs.
