The Eastern Regional Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, Superintendent of Police James Sarfo-Peprah, said on Friday that people should stop attributing road accidents to witches and wizards.
“If road accidents in the country are caused by witches, wizards and principalities as some people claim, then where are our numerous pastors, prophets, bishops and archbishops who pray 24 hours at the various prayer camps?” he asked.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah said non-compliance with traffic regulations such as speeding, wrongful overtaking, overloading, lack of maintenance of vehicles, fatigue and others as the main causes of road accidents.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua on Friday, he said in spite of road safety campaigns and education carried before and during the Christmas and the New Year festivities for drivers and other road users, road accidents continued to increase.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah appealed to drivers to rest when they are tired and avoid “killing innocent people” and bread winners of families
He assured that the police would not relent on their efforts to educate drivers and other road users on traffic regulations and therefore appealed to all stakeholders including travellers to collaborate with the police to reduce road accidents.
