The Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, who will begin his two-day visit to India on January 17, will meet Indian nuclear scientists and visit various institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy.
Amano will inaugurate the 21st Annual Conference of Indian Nuclear Society on 'Impact of Radiation Technology on Human Health and Environment' on January 17.
He will also visit Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and `Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer' at Kharghar at Navi Mumbai, Department of Atomic Energy sources said.
On January 18, he will be visiting Kalpakkam in south Indian state Tamil Nadu which houses the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Nuclear Power Corporation's two
operating indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, and BHAVNI's under--construction Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor(PFBR).
India has gifted indigenously developed technology for treatment of cancer -- `Bhabhatron'-- to Vietnam and Sri Lanka
through the IAEA's Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy. One more will be made available to one of the African countries, according to sources in DAE.
Amano will present the Indian Nuclear Society's Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award to former AEC Chairman Anil Kakodkar, who played a vital role in the Indo-US nuclear deal.
The IAEA Director General will also present the INS Outstanding Service Award, INS Young Scientists and Engineers Award, and INS Science Communication Award.
