The government was not behind Tuesday's raid of the offices of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, said on Wednesday.
"The action of EOCO is not at the request of government," she said in a statement signed in Accra.
The Minister explained that the EOCO, under Act 804, was a specialized agency which monitored, investigated and prosecuted economic and organized
crime.
"As an independent organization, the EOCO's actions in the GFA matter cannot and should not be attributed to government," Ms Dansua said.
She dismissed claims by some officials of the GFA and commentators that the work of the EOCO amounted to "government's interference in the affairs of the GFA".
EOCO on Tuesday raided the offices of the GFA and took away computers and documents as it investigates breaches of the laws of Ghana on tax, fraud and others.
"All the other institutions supplied the requested documents but the GFA failed to comply, until 14 October, 2010 when the office received a letter from the GFA stating that they have received the letter from the office," EOCO said in a statement.
