A ninety-one-year-old vegetarian, Mr Paul Braku
Kwakyi, has advised Ghanaians to become vegetarians to guarantee their longevity.
Mr Kwakyi said since January 1948, when he switched off from eating meat and depended on plant-based foods solely, he had never visited the clinic.
Speaking on Saturday during a ceremony to mark vegetarian week in Accra, Mr Kwakyi said the human body was very receptive to vegetarian foods which,
he said, also nourished the body systems adequately.
The function was organized by the Vegetarian Association of Ghana (VAG) in collaboration with the International Vegetarian Union.
The Reverend Doctor (Mrs) Resa Mills, member of VAG, buttressing the claim said her tonsillitis vanished soon after she turned vegetarian, adding
that people who look down on vegetarians do so because of ignorance.
The Rev. Mrs Mills said her obesity had also reduced considerably and that she felt no pains in any part of the body and recommended that people
should refrain from eating meat. Do not think that you will loose weight and become sick if you dont take fatty foods.
Major (rtd) Twum K. Effah, President of VAG, said the aim of celebrating the week was to educate members of the public about the benefits of becoming a vegetarian.
He said it was appalling to see people falling sick because of the lack of knowledge and that one of the major ways to live a healthier life was to
become a vegetarian.
Major (rtd) Effah said VAG is planning to build a secretariat to promote its activities.
