EMEFS Construction Company, a real estate developer, has handed over to the Ghana Police Service a building to be used as a police station, a double cabin pick-up vehicle and three self-contained houses.
The handing over and the inauguration of the 300,000-dollar facilities at Mataheko near Afienya in the Dangme West District is to curb armed robberies in the community and its environs.
The police station has an exhibit room, armoury, water dispenser, CID room, and an officer room, all furnished by Kingdom Books and Stationary in addition to male and female cells.
The houses for the personnel consist of one two-
bedroom house and two one-bedroom houses.
Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, the Inspector General of Police, commended the company and called on other real estate developers to follow the example of the company.
He said policing in the Greater Accra Region faced challenges due to the development of new suburbs.
Mr Quaye said community policing had become
imperative because the concept and its practice ensured that the citizenry and the police worked in partnership.
He said the activities of squatters and land guards who sometimes turned out to be armed robbers, called for the adoption of community policing or problem-solving policing.
The IGP said the Service had entered into negotiations with its international partners to develop an all-inclusive Community Policing Programme.
Mr Quaye added that community policing teams were also partnering the personnel on patrol and tent cities to foster closer police/community relationships.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Augustine Gyening, the Tema Regional Police Commander, said it was imperative that more policemen were recruited to provide adequate and effective
security for residents of the Tema Region.
Mr Enoch Entsua-Mensah, Technical Director of
EMEFS, said the 33-year-old company decided to build the police station in October 2008 as part of its corporate social responsibility.
He said the decision was necessitated by armed
robberies in the Mataheko community where one of the company's developments was situated, adding that its clients' security was paramount to its success.
"We believe also that if the Police should offer services to the community, then we should also complement and supplement them in their efforts at fighting crime on our behalf."
