Mr Opam Brown Akolbire, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, has said parents in the Upper East Region should give priority to the education of their children.
Speaking during a tour of the constituency, he said education was one of the major tools that could be used to defeat poverty in the region.
Mr Akolbire said he was saddened to hear stories of parents refusing to sell their animals to fund their children's education.
He said he had assisted 260 students to pursue both secondary and tertiary education and through his efforts the Ghana Education Trust Fund,
the municipal assembly and other development partners had built school infrastructure in some communities.
He mentioned some of the beneficiary communities as Kantia, Azoribisi, Tindongmolgo, Afegre, Dorongo, Soe, Yariga, Yorogo and Madina.
Mr Akolbire said over 600 students had applied to him for support in education but his Common Fund was not enough to cater for such a huge number of applicants and appealed to parents to as a matter of urgency sacrifice and support their children.
