Police Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, Eastern Regional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), has challenged personnel of the unit to be more vigilant to ensure that defaulting drivers did not go scot-free.
He said despite efforts to reduce the spate of road accidents in the country, most drivers refused to adhere to road traffic regulations resulting in unavoidable accidents with its attendant loss of lives and properties.
Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Koforidua on safety issues, the MTTU Commander noted that over speeding, drunk-driving, and overloading were still the major factors to road accidents in the country.
He said apart from accidents where vehicles crashed or collided, driver's refusal to adhere to speed limits more often led to knock downs and killing of innocent persons.
Mr Peprah said between January and June this year, about 300 drivers had been arraigned before court for various traffic offences adding that it was not a good sign for road safety.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah said the MTTU was not interested in arresting defaulting drivers and sending them to court, but was rather concern in making the road safe for all users.
He, therefore, cautioned drivers, who refused to obey the rules to desist from that before they were caught.
