Strong winds and torrential rains battered southern China's Guangdong province, where Typhoon Chanthu made landfall Thursday, officials said.
Meteorologists said Chanthu packed winds of 78 mph and brought locally heavy downpours to many parts of the province, such as Zhanjiang, which recorded
more than 3 inches of rain since early afternoon, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
No deaths were reported, officials said.
Chanthu strengthened from a tropical storm to a typhoon Wednesday afternoon about 136 miles southeast of Wenchang on the island province of Hainan, weather officials said.
The Qiongzhou Strait between Guangdong and Hainan was closed to shipping and at least 26 flights departing and arriving from Haikou Meilan International Airport in Haikou, Hainan's provincial capital, were canceled Thursday,
Xinhua reported.
Meteorologists in Guangdong forecast Chanthu would travel to the northwest, gradually weakening as it moved over neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
