The Gomoa West directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has presented relief items worth over GH25,000 to victims of a wind storm which caused havoc in some parts of the district.
The items included roofing sheets, mattresses, mats, used clothing, and assorted soap.
The victims came from Gomoa Eshiem, Mozano, Gomoa Abamkrom, Gomoa Kokofu, Gomoa Tekyhiman and Dawurampong.
Speaking at the ceremony at Gomoa Eshiem, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, advised landlords in the area
to fortify their houses from time to time to enable them to withstand storms.
He expressed concern about the bad state of some buildings, describing them as not fit for human habitation.
Some have their roofing sheets hanging whilst others are worn out leaving the inhabitants at the mercy of the weather, the DCE noted, and said the people must desist from portraying themselves as being poor all the time.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah pointed out that relief items from government or donor agencies could not make up for the loss incurred during the storm, and urged Ghanaians to take the necessary precautions to prevent disasters.
Mr Kow Ewusie-Wilson, District NADMO Co-ordinator, appealed to the beneficiaries to make do with the items as disaster had caused great destruction in the country this year, making it impossible for the demands of all victims to be met fully.
Nana Kwa Donkoh III, Chief of Eshiem, thanked the government for coming to their aid.
He said the gesture was a demonstration of governments caring nature and an indication that President John Evans Atta Mills was truly a father for all.
Mr Peter Antwi Boasiako, District Co-ordinating Director, who made the presentation, advised the people to plant trees in their communities to serve as wind brakes.
