A chlorine gas leak from a corroded canister in Mumbai sickened at least 98 people as it drifted through a nearby college building, officials said Wednesday.
Mumbai's chief fire officer Uday Tatkare said 84 people -- most of them students and port workers -- were hospitalized and others were treated and
released, CNN reported.
Fire crews used a water blanket to contain the leak at the site, a hazardous materials storage facility belonging to the Mumbai Port Trust, Tatkare said.
Authorities evacuated a nearby residential neighborhood, he said.
"The situation is now under control," Tatkare remarked.
Experts are neutralizing more than 100 other chlorine canisters that officials said were at the compound since 1997. The Mumbai Port Trust said in a statement importers had not taken delivery of the gas tanks from its facility.
"The issues like why these imported cylinders were lying for long ... are being inquired into," it said.
