Kidnapped Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Wahaab Oba has appealed to the National body of the union to save him and three others from their kidnappers.
National President of NUJ Garba Mohammed disclosed this at a news conference on Sunday in Abuja, adding that Oba made the appeal in a telephone conversation with him.
"We had our National Executive Council meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Friday and Saturday and today (Sunday) we are to depart to our respective states," he told reporters.
"But unfortunately, the chairmen of Lagos and Delta were involved in the case of kidnap; they were intercepted by some persons," he said.
"The chairman of Delta was able to escape into the bush, but Wahaab Oba could not," Mohammed added.
He said about two hours after they were told of the incident, the kidnappers called him.
"The kidnappers said they were with four of our members, including the driver then they linked me up with Oba. He pleaded that we should do everything possible to give the kidnappers whatever they demanded," Mohammed added.
The NUJ president said one of the kidnappers later spoke with him, and demanded 250 million naira ransom to release Oba and the others.
Mohammed said all efforts to negotiate with the kidnappers as well as get in touch with them again failed because their number was not available.
He said immediately after the discussion with the kidnappers, he spoke with the commissioners of police in Abia and Akwa Ibom States on the issue.
