Mr Christopher Owusu Marfo, who undertook a nationwide peace walk to campaign for peace during the 2008 general election, has embarked on a nationwide tree planting campaign in basic schools.
He hopes his campaign would inculcate the habit of planting, preserving and protection of trees and admiration for plants among schoolchildren.
Mr Owusu Marfo who called at the offices of the Ghana News Agency in Ho to outline his schedules expressed the hope that the exercise would contribute significantly to the national afforestation campaign.
He said the exercise would be on the theme; "Afforestation Ensures Food Security," and would involve pupils and students.
Mr Owusu Marfo underscored the importance of tree planting to the socio-economic development of the country and urged individuals to develop
"interest and love for trees."
"Everybody must endeavour to own a tree in life and desist from deforestation knowing very well that when the last tree dies, the last man
dies," he said.
" Let's cultivate the habit of planting trees in our houses, work places and farms," Mr Owusu Marfo reiterated.
He appealed to the Ministry of Lands and Forestry to educate farmers on the need to practice afforestation and protect trees on their farms.
