An overcrowded boat capsized in the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district in northern India Monday, killing at least 25 people, officials said.
Police officials said the boat was carrying more than 50 people when it sank in the Dubahar area, The Hindu reported.
Officials said they believe 17 other people were missing.
The mishap occurred when people from several villages were crossing the Ganges from the Ojhawalia ghat to attend an event on the other side of the river, a local official said.
